The archive

State archives burn.

Infrastructure fails.

The body endures.

From the Silk Road through the medieval empires, across the Atlantic world, to the transportation ships bound for Australia, the moving histories of Romani, Sinti and Traveller communities have been filed away, taxed or erased by imperial archives.

And still we have outlasted every one of those empires. Our lineage endures in the moving body: in the steps a family carries, and the rhythms a people refuse to forget. Today we change the paradigm.

What is happening

From digital mahala to the global stage

Gypsy Fires launched on June 3 as a digital fireside and archive: decentralized diasporic knowledge, translated into public tools that resist academic containment.

Now the work leaves the screen and puts bodies on the stage. Romani Dance Theatre is founding as an international performance ensemble and creative laboratory, bridging historical research with kinetic performance and claiming institutional permanence for Romani arts on our own terms.

The basis

Decades of work, uncompromising rigor

This company is not built overnight. My academic work began in September 2013, but I have been doing this all my life: collecting and reclaiming our dance history, our lineage.

I

The research

A doctoral thesis, Intimate Violence: Feeling Impact in Irish Step Dance (University of Limerick), examined by Thomas DeFrantz and Órfhlaith Ní Bhriain and accepted without corrections in 2025, on how marginalized bodies choreo-navigate spatial enclosure and state violence.

II

The scholarship

My chapter introducing choreonavigation, “‘This Little Wooden World’: Choreo-navigating Maritime Dance,” opens Celebrating Flamenco’s Tangled Roots: The Body Questions (Cambridge Scholars, 2022). In Conversation: Romani Dance (Bloomsbury Academic, 2027), co-edited with Dr. Rosamaria Kostic Cisneros, is under contract and forthcoming.

III

The hybrid

A Bashaldo Romani scholar, traditional step dancer and technologist, treating practice-based research not as a replacement for history but as added archival rigor.

Making the work

The only way to reclaim it is to make it

I realized that the only way to truly reclaim, continue and study the past of our traditions is to make work. Not only to write about it, but to actually do it.

Our lineage runs through puppetry, art dance, percussive dance, divination and circus, through musical trades like blacksmithing, and through figures like Charlie Chaplin. That inheritance cannot be read back to life from a page. It has to be danced, rehearsed and staged.

So I have been preparing a global company of Roma and Sinti artists, connected across all six continents we belong to.

Why

Disputed history as an act of liberation

For generations, non-Roma chroniclers have written about us, exoticizing or pathologizing our movement.

As a Rom scholar entering this terrain, I read maritime logs, parish tax records and transit routes against the grain, through percussive dance and somatic technology. What surfaces are hidden truths about how a people survived.

Accessing this disputed history is how we secure our future.

Manifesto

We reject the lie that tradition and skill cannot be conceptual high art.

Romani Dance Theatre brings the complete somatic circle—percussive impact, ritual, classical music, street kinetics, and divination—into high-art theatre.

We possess both the ancestral technique and the archival abstraction.

We are not asking for space; we are reclaiming the ring.

Phase I pre-seed

Fueling the launch, milestone by milestone

To move at the speed of creation and build cross-border infrastructure, through Rustle Media LLC in New York and a European footprint in Spain, we are opening a Phase I pre-seed round with an $18,000 target. Instead of an all-or-nothing counter, every contribution moves us toward a working milestone.

  1. Milestone 1

    $6,000

    Digital & legal infrastructure

UnlocksPlatform expansion on gypsyfires.com, cross-border entity setup and initial founder operating runway in Southern Spain.

What comes after

The horizon: institutional sovereignty

Phase I is the spark. Beyond the first residency and the platform, the road ahead:

  1. 1

    Global touring & public assemblies

Live performances and assemblies convening Romani elders, water protectors and international artists.

  2. 2

    Academic integration

Partnership pipelines with leading institutions, and the publication of the Bloomsbury volume.

  3. 3

    Permanent infrastructure

Romani Dance Theatre as a self-sustaining global institution, securing Romani artistic and intellectual sovereignty for generations to come.
