Bashaldo Gypsy dancer, harper, software engineer, and scholar

GYPSY FIRES A living archive of decolonized dance history, somatic resilience, and embodied movement.

The Mission

Dance belongs to the people, yet stage dance and institutional archives carry a hidden history of cultural control. Gypsy Fires exists to pull back the curtain on sterile academic gatekeeping, unmask mythologies around traditional movement, and reclaim dance through ancestral Romani philosophy and physical rhythm.

This is a space for researchers, movers, and seekers who want to understand what dance actually is beyond institutional narratives and artificial rules.

What We Investigate

  • Decolonized Movement History: Critical investigations unraveling the political and institutional roots of ballet, step dance, and global percussive traditions.

  • Somatic Impact & Resilience: Practical methods using Timedancing and Micro-Dance to break desk-bound corporate fatigue, unfreeze the nervous system, and restore physical agility.

  • Romani Philosophy & Lineage: Inside perspectives on fortune-telling, memory, and ancestral survival tools carried across centuries and oceans.

About the Founder

Gypsy Fires is edited and written by Dr. Russell Patrick Brown, a Bashaldo Gypsy dancer, harper, software engineer, and scholar. He holds a PhD in Arts Practice from the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance (University of Limerick), where his doctoral thesis mapped how percussive dance codifies memory and trauma resilience. His research bridges generational wisdom, technical software architecture and de-colonial performance practice.
