Neuro-Percussive Micro-Dance
Short, seated body-percussion practices rooted in Romani dance tradition and trauma research. Reset your nervous system one strike at a time.
Micro-Dance is a short-form, impact-driven somatic practice that brings rhythm, touch and play back into the body in the middle of daily life. It is built from Romani and percussive dance traditions, trauma-informed somatics and research from my PhD on how the body re-regulates through impact.
What it is
Most somatic tools ask you to sit still and quiet the mind. Micro-Dance does the opposite. It uses brief, intentional body percussion — chest tapping, finger snapping, clapping — to reach the nervous system directly through sound, touch and rhythm. Each lesson is designed to be done anywhere: at a desk, on a train, in the corner of a difficult day.
Why it works
The exercises are grounded in three lines of evidence:
- Bilateral and vagal regulation. Alternating left-right tactile input, paired with orienting phrases, supports the ventral vagal system and helps the brain exit freeze and hyper-vigilance.
- Fascial and cortical stimulation. Sharp, rhythmic contact wakes Pacinian corpuscles and the dense hand maps of the sensorimotor cortex, restoring spatial awareness and attention.
- Cultural memory. Romani, Irish, Flamenco, clog and step-dance traditions have long turned shoes, bodies and breath into resilient rhythm. These are not new techniques; they are old ones returned to daily use.
What you get
The current Micro-Dance series is hosted on Substack. Lessons are short video practices with step-by-step guidance.
- Micro-Dance 1: Chest Slapping — a seated practice for orienting, breath and self-recognition.
- Micro-Dance 2: Finger Snapping — a practice for spatial awareness, fascial resonance and meeting the world as it is.
New lessons are added to the Micro-Dance collection.
Who it is for
Micro-Dance is for people who are tired of being told to calm down and accept the status quo. It is for elders with creaky knees, workers at laptops, dancers who have stopped dancing, and anyone who wants a small, honest rhythm to carry through the day. No special clothes, no studio, no prior training.
